My mom turned 72 last month.

A few years ago, she went in for a DEXA scan and found out she had osteopenia. Her doctor recommended medication, and my mom said, “Can you give me a chance first?” She told him her daughter and son-in-law owned a gym and she wanted to commit to getting stronger before going the medicine route.

My mom has always been active. She’s a yogi, she walks, she’s independent, but she was never a “strength training person.” No sports background. No history of lifting weights. It just wasn’t her thing.

But she decided to try.

She started coming in consistently. Nothing crazy, just two days a week. Over time, things started to change. She got stronger. She felt more capable. More confident in her body.

She actually said to us the other day, she can’t believe how much stronger she feels.

That’s a huge win.

She lives on her own. Takes care of her dog and her chickens. Travels in her little RV. Carries her own things. Handles life. And she’s doing it with strength.

On her birthday, John and I took her out to dinner. When we got back to the house, she showed us something in her bedroom. A pull-up bar. She had asked for it as a gift and has been practicing her grip strength, just hanging and getting a little stronger over time.

Later that night, we ended up in a mini coaching session working on her push-ups. Giving her small tweaks and helping her build strength. And I had this moment where I thought…

Her 52-year-old self would have never imagined this.

At 72, working on her push-up form.

Muscle is the organ of longevity.

If we want to move well, feel good, and stay independent as we age, strength isn’t optional. And the best part is, it’s never too late to start.

I share her story all the time with people who feel nervous walking through our doors

. The ones who think, “I’m not a strength training person.”

Neither was she.

Until she was.
