I went and got a bone density scan recently, and if I’m being honest… I went in feeling pretty confident.

I lift. I move. I take care of myself.

Women tell me all the time their bone density is low, and it always surprises me. So in my head, I just assumed… that wouldn’t be me.

I went down to LifeFit Labs in Roswell to see Mike because I wanted a baseline. I wanted to know where I stood.

I wasn’t nervous. I wasn’t hesitant. I actually expected it to be great.

And when I saw the results… I was surprised.

Not in a scared way. Just in a way that made me pause.

Because what I was looking at wasn’t just about today. It told a story about the last 30 plus years of my life. And I can’t stop thinking about it.

On the left is John.
On the right is me.

We live the same life now. We eat the same food. We train in the same gym. But our bodies tell very different stories. Look at how white and SOLID John’s bones are compared to mine!

John started training young. Really young. Jumping, sprinting, lifting, loading his body in ways that built strength and density over time.

I didn’t.

I’ve always worked out, but it looked very different. Step aerobics. Cardio. Light weights. 10, maybe 15lb dumbbells. I didn’t touch a barbell until my late 30s. I wasn’t jumping. I wasn’t doing anything that really challenged my bones to grow stronger.

And what you’re seeing in that image is the result of that.

Bone is living tissue. It responds to load. It adapts to what we ask of it.

The earlier you start, the more it builds.

It reminds me so much of saving for retirement. The earlier you invest, the more it compounds over time.

John built a foundation early.

I didn’t.

And now, at 48, I’m looking at that difference in real time.

If you see this image and feel a little discouraged, I need you to stay with me here.

Because this is the part that really matters. I am in the green. That means my bone density is still in a healthy place. And what I learned is this…

I may never have the same density that John has. That foundation was built over decades starting at a really young age.

But that doesn’t mean I’m stuck. It means I have a clear goal now.

» Maintain what I’ve built.
» Strengthen what I have.
» Do everything I can to avoid decline as I get older.
» Test. Don’t guess (this is where Mike at Life Fit Labs comes in.)

That is a powerful place to be, so now I’m making small changes.

I’m adding more jumping. More change of direction. More impact. The kinds of things that actually stimulate bone. Nothing crazy. Just intentional. Then in a year I will test again to ensure what I’m doing IS making a difference. Mike at Life Fit Labs said,  “We’re not passive passengers. I think many people tend to view aging as something that simply happens to them and is unavoidable. Yes, the age increases, but we have some control over the impact of that.”

We’ll actually be putting together a really simple post workout jumping protocol in the gym. It takes less than five minutes. If you’re a member, you’ll see it soon.

If you’re not a M+b member, this is exactly why programming matters. This isn’t random. It’s done with purpose.

And one more thing I want to say…

You are NOT too young to start paying attention to this. And you are absolutely NOT too old to begin.

We have members in their 70s getting stronger right now.

This is a long game.

And what you do today really does matter.
