One of my favorite parts of what we do at MOVE+breathe is our goal-setting sessions. It’s a chance for us to slow down, check in, look at your progress, and make a plan for what’s next. And during those sessions, we track a few things that really matter.

One of them is grip strength.

At first, people always kind of laugh when we pull out the little device and ask them to squeeze it as hard as they can. It seems so simple. But the number it gives us is actually really meaningful. It’s actually one of the strongest predictors of overall health and longevity.

Studies have shown that people with higher grip strength tend to:
• live longer
• have lower risk of heart disease
• maintain independence as they age
• and stay more active overall

So when we test it, we’re not just collecting a random number. We’re getting a snapshot of your strength and your resilience.

But here’s the part I love the most. It’s something you can improve.💪

Meet Amy, she’s a yogi turned strength training lover, a life long learner and and amazing human! She never misses her goal-setting session since we started them in 2023. Every time, we test her grip strength. And every time, it has improved!

What makes her story even more special is that along the way, she had hand surgery. Did you read that? Surgery on her HAND!

Most people, understandably, would have pulled back after something like that. Maybe avoided using that hand as much or felt hesitant to push it. But she did the opposite. She got more intentional. She focused on rebuilding her strength, stayed consistent with her workouts, and paid attention to the little things like carries and grip work.

And over time, she didn’t just recover. She got stronger than she was before.

That’s the kind of progress that doesn’t happen from one workout or one good week. It comes from showing up, again and again, and trusting the process even when it’s not flashy.

It’s also a really good reminder that it is never too late to get stronger. She’s in her 50s, and her numbers continue to improve. That’s not luck. That’s consistency.

This is exactly why we do what we do. Not just to help you get a good workout in, but to help you build a body that can support you for the long run. A body that can adapt, recover, and continue to get stronger over time.

So the next time you see us pull out that grip strength tester, just know there’s a lot more behind that number than you might think.

And if you haven’t scheduled your next goal-setting session yet, this is your nudge. We’d love to sit down with you, look at your progress, and map out what’s next.
